If you are like me you enjoy a warm, satisfying bowl of homemade soup for lunch. It’s also a good way to add some healthy vegetables to your diet very easily. My Creamy Split Pea and Ham Soup can be made on your stovetop or in a crockpot, whichever method you prefer. I use dried split peas for this recipe but I have also made it with canned peas when dried split peas were not available. It takes a little time to make this soup because the split peas need some time to soften up during cooking and eventually turn smooth and creamy. I either use leftover ham from dinner or you can buy a packaged ham steak in the refrigerator section of the supermarket.
I like to make a pot of this soup for family parties. I’m always surprised to see my nieces and nephews trying this soup when I know they don’t always want to eat their vegetables. - Chop up the yellow onion and carrots into bite-sized pieces. Mince the garlic. Next, chop up the ham steak or your leftover ham into bite sized pieces. Chop up bacon strips into small pieces. In a large stockpot heat 2 T vegetable oil on medium heat and add the bacon pieces. Sauté bacon, ham, onion and carrots in oil with a wooden spoon for 5 minutes, stirring often. The bacon should begin to brown and the onions become translucent. Add garlic to pot and cook for one minute.
- Sort the split peas and remove any discolored peas. Then, rinse split peas in a colander under running cool water. Add the split peas to your large sized stockpot or dutch oven along with a package of Goya Sazon seasoning and all of the chicken broth. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined. Bring pot to boil, stirring occasionally. Turn heat down to medium low and simmer for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
